Strategies that mean Business 

Meet Andrew Brink Director and founder of Strat Africa  

Andrew Brink is a South African national who heads up Strat Africa, a business consultancy operating out of Cape Town and with easy reach into Africa. 

Launched off an academic platform comprising a B.Sc and M.Sc degree (University of Cape Town 1986), Andrew’s career to date is summarized below:

Executive positions: He has twenty years exposure with multinationals in the lubricants business. During this period he picked up extensive international business management experience, co-running a public company in South Korea (Hankook Shell) as joint executive director; as General Manager for a lubricants JV in Saudi Arabia; as Lubricants Manager for Shell Pakistan and as Marketing Manager for some 42 countries across Africa and Middle East.

During these assignments he also undertook extra-curricular roles in Shell’s global marketing operations and for example spear-headed a new business development program for the Steel sector globally.

Directorships: He has served on the board of eight companies in four different countries.

Strategies for growth: Andrew has developed and successfully implemented strategies for business growth in countries across Africa, the Middle East, the sub-continent and the Far East. These have encompassed a range of market types and levels of business maturity i.e. from start-up strategies in countries like Algeria, to well developed operations for instance in South Korea and South Africa, and turn-around operations in Egypt and West Africa.

Marketing Strategies: Added to the general management experience, he also spent a stint as Shell’s Marketing Manager for Africa and the Middle East, covering some 42 countries. Here Andrew was deeply involved in understanding the marketing mix in these geographies to ensure the development (and delivery) of compelling customer value propositions for Shell’s somewhat complex range of automotive/ industrial lubricants and related services.

As global team leader for Shell’s Steel Sector, he led the development of complex multi-million dollar service propositions to some of the largest steel mills in the world.

Customer Route to Market: A significant portion of consumer business across Africa and Asia is handled by third party agents and distributors. Solid Route to market (RTM) strategies and sound channel distribution are crucial to business success in these often difficult developing markets. Andrew was involved in many distribution optimization studies and RTM implementation projects across these geographies.

Production exposure: Apart from general management and marketing experience, Andrew’s involvement in production is significant, having been responsible for a number of lubricants blending operations around the world (6 in Pakistan, 1 in Saudi Arabia and 1 in Busan South Korea). He was also a director of Blendcor in Durban - a JV production facility jointly owned by BP and Shell for supply across Southern Africa.

On leadership: Andrew’s leadership skills have been shaped over a life-time of dealing professionally with people across many cultures and creeds. He firmly believes no-one rises to low expectations; that vision and values are mission-critical in the growth journey and that determination and clearly defined goals are essential for success in any business environment. With a passion for coaching and mentoring Andrew has also built his ability to lead virtual teams across the globe.

Outside the corporate world: Andrew has also spent time in academic research, as a university lecturer, as a development metallurgist in the steel industry, as a researcher in the nuclear industry and as a commissioned officer during compulsory military service.

When not at work, Andrew enjoys spending his free time with his family at his home in Somerset West, and when time permits, deep sea sport angling in the waters off Cape Point.
